Aviva Community Fund - DOTC/Ranger Sport and Recreation Initiative

The Aviva Community Fund is giving away $1,000,000 for ideas to create positive change in Canada.

Ranger Insurance has teamed up with the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council to create the "DOTC/Ranger Sport and Recreation Initiative".

  • Ranger Insurance,Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council and Dakota Ojibway Police Services are teaming to create activities for the youth on the First nations Communities in Western Manitoba.
  • These activities will help to create leadership, pride, honesty, teamwork, sportsmanship, confidence, responsibility, perseverence, judgement and good decision making by the Aboriginal youth.
  • In doing this we hope to reduce arson, crime, vandalism , drug use and alcohol abuse and gang involvement in the communities by the youth and into the future.
  • We have had a few initiatives to date ; 2 flag football jamborees produced with several Blue Bomber Alumni as coaches and hosting 132 youths from the 7 first Nation Communities and a Golf Initaitve where 36 youths from one community were taught the basics of golf and had a great time playing their first 9 hole tournament.
  • Between Oct.8 and 13, we are promoting a Fire Prevention program where youths from each community who will participate in a Fire Fighter competition with Hose rolling, hose pulling, Body [dummy] dragging, stair climbing with a dummy, target spraying and several other activities all while dressed in fire fighting gear. This will lead to an overall best of competition at the Brandon Fire College. Also from this a formal Fire Prevention program is being taught in every class room in every school by the DOTC Fire Prevention officer. The teaching program will also be supplemented by a Training Trailer which shows how persons trapped in a burning building can save themselves, their family and also reduce damage.
  • We are starting a Lacrosse initiative in November with 2 communities currently enrolled .These communities have over 80 youths set to learn Lacrosse from certified coaches and members of the Provincial and National teams.
  • We hope to provide programs for Spelling Bees, Science Fairs, a "reach for the top "format competition, Lacrosse, Ringette, Figure Skating, House Hockey league, Field Hockey, Team handball, 4 vs 4 Road Hockey tounaments and 3 vs 3 basketball tournaments and any other activity that can help deliver our goals to the Aboriginal youth of Manitoba.
  • This program will be expanded to all First Nations in Manitoba once we have established a full delivery system.
  • We are in the process of establishing a budget for the first year and outlining a 5 year plan of action.
